Why do-follow links still matter in 2026

Every few years, a wave of commentary declares backlinks dead as a ranking factor. They aren’t — what’s dead is the low-effort version of link building: directory submissions, private blog networks, and links bought in bulk from sites that exist solely to sell them.
What changed, and what didn’t
Search engines have become considerably better at identifying link schemes and discounting them. What hasn’t changed is that a genuine editorial link — one placed because an editor judged it useful to their readers — remains difficult to fake at scale, which is exactly why it still carries weight.
The practical distinction
The question worth asking about any prospective link isn’t “will this pass as legitimate?” but “would this placement exist if search engines didn’t exist at all?” A link earned through a genuinely useful guest contribution, a data study a journalist wanted to cite, or a mention in an industry roundup passes that test. A link bought from a site whose only readership is other link buyers does not.
Where this leaves link building strategy
Fewer, better-targeted placements consistently outperform a high-volume campaign built on marginal sites — both for search performance and for the much simpler reason that a marginal placement rarely sends any actual referral traffic either.
